Why bills cause more arguments than rent
Rent is fixed, predictable and the same every month. Bills arrive at odd intervals, vary in size, and always seem to land in the month somebody was away. Worse, they are usually paid by one person and reimbursed by everyone else over the following fortnight, which means the record of who has actually settled lives in one person’s head. That is the failure point, and it is rarely dishonesty. It is simply that nobody can reconstruct a month of scattered transfers.
Equal or custom, decided when the bill is added
Most bills split evenly. Some should not: the housemate who ran a heater all winter, or the one who was away for a month. You can split evenly across whoever you select, or set custom amounts per person that still add up to the total. The important part is that the split is agreed at the moment the bill is added, not argued about weeks later when the money is already owed.
Settle up that is per person, not per bill
Each person’s share is tracked on its own. When someone pays you, mark just their share settled and nothing else changes. A bill can be half settled with no ambiguity about which half, and the outstanding total is always accurate. This is the single biggest difference from tracking bills in a note, where a bill is either done or not done and reality sits somewhere in between.
Duplicate detection
Two people adding the same electricity bill is the classic share house mess, and it usually surfaces a month later as an argument about who overpaid. If a bill with the same description and amount already exists that day, you get a warning before it goes in twice.
Visibility you control
Bills can be visible to everyone in the property, or only to the people included in the split plus whoever added it. Useful when a bill genuinely only concerns some of the house, and useful in properties where the owner does not live there and does not need to see every grocery run.
Your outstanding balance, always current
The summary at the top of the bills screen shows what you owe across every unsettled share. Because it updates as people settle, it answers the only question anyone actually has, which is how much am I behind, without anyone having to add anything up.
Common questions
Can I split a bill unevenly?
Yes. Choose custom amounts per person instead of an equal split. The app checks that the custom amounts add up to the bill total before saving.
What if only some housemates should pay a bill?
Select just those people when you add it. You can also set the bill to be visible only to the people in the split plus whoever added it.
How do I mark that someone has paid me back?
Settle their share individually. Each person’s share is tracked separately, so a bill can be partly settled without confusion about who still owes.
Does it stop the same bill being added twice?
Yes. If a bill with the same description and amount already exists on that date, you are warned before it is added again.
How far back can I see my bills?
Free accounts see the current month. Pro and Pro Plus see the full history. Bills you still owe on stay visible regardless of the plan, so your outstanding total is never understated.
