Why cleaning rosters fail
Nearly every share house writes a roster. Very few are still being followed two months later. The roster is rarely the problem. The problem is that the jobs are undefined, the record lives in one person’s memory, and eventually one housemate becomes the roster police, at which point shared responsibility turns into nagging and the whole thing collapses.
Lists for whatever the house needs
Create as many lists as you need: groceries, cleaning roster, things to fix, house rules, the shared shopping run. Each one is shared with everyone in the property and updates live, so two people at the supermarket are not buying the same thing.
Assign it to someone
Items can be assigned to a specific housemate, which turns “someone should really do the bins” into a name and a tick box. Unassigned items stay open for whoever gets to them first. The point is not surveillance, it is that an unassigned job is nobody’s job.
Recurring tasks reset themselves
Bins go out weekly. The bathroom gets cleaned fortnightly. Mark a task as recurring and it resets on schedule once the period has elapsed, so nobody has to rebuild the list every week. This is the part that makes a roster survive past the first month, because the ongoing effort of maintaining it drops to zero.
Proof when it matters
Attach a photo to any item. Useful for a shared shopping receipt so reimbursement is straightforward, and useful for showing a job was actually done to the standard the house agreed.
A record, which is the real point
Most cleaning arguments are not about cleaning. They are about one person’s belief that they are doing more than their share, which is almost impossible to discuss productively when there is no record. Once there is one, the conversation either resolves in ten seconds or reveals a genuine imbalance worth fixing. Both outcomes are better than the argument.
